Varnell Johnson

Varnell Johnson, affectionately known as VJ, was a veteran music ​executive and former president of the Living Legends Foundation. Born ​in Philadelphia, he graduated from Simon Gratz High School at 16 and ​served as a combat medic in the Vietnam War. After an honorable ​discharge, he earned a degree in marketing and advertising from ​Temple University, where he first encountered the music business.


VJ was known for being one of the first Black executives to have total ​autonomy within the label system. He not only signed great artists but ​also hired and mentored other Black executives, significantly impacting ​many careers. He was always a source of advice and support, known for ​his caring nature and promotion of women in the industry.

Through his company, Junes Entertainment, VJ continued to provide ​his expertise to industry artists and label executives. His leadership and ​vision left an indelible mark on the music world.
